HTC Wildfire S: Power and Affordability Combined
One would normally assume that in order to enjoy the latest Android technology on a mobile phone, you would have to brace yourself for paying upwards of £25 per month at the very least. But all that has changed when the HTC Wildfire was launched in the UK in June of 2010. For a meagre £15, you can now enjoy practically all the features of the elitist HTC Desire at almost half the price.
The Wildfire was a mainstream hit and it did hold its own quite well when compared to other phones in the same price range but it did have its limitations – screen resolution was lower than those of its contemporaries, RAM was limited, and the processor speed left something to be desired. Besides, it has gotten a bit dated, which is why it’s really good that HTC has come up with a new, improved version called the Wildfire S.
The three main problems with the original Wildfire were adequately addressed in the new version. Although the screen size remains the same at 3.2 inches, the resolution has been doubled to 320 x 480 so now there is a lot more clarity and vividness when browsing the web, playing games, viewing pictures or watching videos.
The operating system was also upgraded to the new Android 2.4 (Gingerbread) from the Android 2.1 (Éclair) of its predecessor. If you think the thousands of apps that could be accessed from the old Wildfire was a lot, you will be just blown away knowing that with Gingerbread, you can access more than 150,000 games and apps on the Android market, which is definitely more than the average person can handle.
In terms of size, the Wildfire S is not necessarily one of the slimmest mobile phones today but with a thickness of 12.4mm, a length of 10.13cm and a width of 5.94cm, it is definitely a small phone. For sure, it’s not as chunky as the first Wildfire and not as heavy either. It is really very sleek because it has no physical keys. Its metallic casing also gives it a very cool look and makes it seem much more expensive than it really is.
As a social and business tool, we find absolutely nothing lacking in the Wildfire. It still has the Friend Stream feature that displays your friends’ Facebook status updates, Flickr photos and latest Tweets all at once. You can also see their Facebook status whenever they call you, thanks to the enhanced Caller ID feature.
You can also use the Wildfire to take high quality pictures using the 5-megapixel camera that is complete with autofocus, expandable microSD memory, LED flash and a smile detection feature. You can also use this phone to record videos.
Despite all these features, the price of the Wildfire S is still reasonably low, just like its predecessor. In fact, it is just about the most feature-packed phone in its price range. Sure, it’s still a far cry from iPhones and Galaxy S’s but for the cash that you are putting out, the quality that you are getting in return is definitely worth it.
